This is an ongoing project I’ve been doing for a while – slitting paper. The act of creating is almost rapistic, involving stabbing and slashing the paper quite brutally with a scalpel. For me it resonates with the viciousness inherent in gender-role conditioning. When I started doing them I was completely unaware of Lucio Fontana’s famous slashed canvases, but I am delighted that this could be seen as a sort of feminist conversation with those works.
