Want to Produce Breathing Room?

September 15, 2021 — weeannabee

We’re looking for a new producer!

Producer: Breathing Room

  • From Nov 2021 (flexibility for the right candidate)

Visual Artist, Anna Berry, is seeking an experienced Producer with track record in tour booking and pitching existing artwork to outdoor and/or light night festivals and gallery spaces, to work with her on her kinetic installation piece Breathing Room.

Breathing Room by Milton Keynes-based artist Anna Berry is a walk-in kinetic light installation that perfectly combines organic and machine elements, creating a unique sensory experience.

Powered by an outer mechanical skeleton, Breathing Room invites you into a gently illuminated tunnel lined with 28,000 cones that ‘breathe’ like a living organism. http://www.annaberry.co.uk/breathing-room/

The piece was made in collaboration with Clive Doherty; commissioned and supported by Unlimited, celebrating the work of disabled artists, with funding from Arts Council England; and co-commissioned by The Stables for IF: Milton Keynes International Festival 2021.

Anna’s current producer, Kate McStraw, is stepping down as the lead producer on this artwork, due to developing her own practice further in 2022, so will not have the capacity to lead on this piece. Kate will still be available to support as co-producer, should this be required. This can be discussed with the incoming producer.

Breathing Room will next be showcased at WordFest in Wakefield (23 – 30 October 2021), and Bright Light Festival in Gloucester (6 – 14 November 2021). It is hoped that a handover will be possible within this period, providing the incoming producer with first-hand experience of the piece during one of these presentations.

The Producer will:

  • Approach promoters/festivals and seek opportunities for the artwork
  • Field incoming booking enquiries and produce suitable quotations for clients
  • Work with the Production Manager to oversee production logistics, contracting, scheduling, crew contracting
  • Manage the budgets for each booking, as well as the overall budget for artwork overheads (storage, repairs, insurance etc)
  • Keep marketing and access information up to date for the artwork
  • Support Anna with Access to Work claims for staffing support, where required
  • Seek out opportunities for the artwork, which may include pitching, applying for funding to further develop the piece, and working with Anna as the piece evolves

What Anna is looking for:

This is a role for an experienced producer looking to add an established artist to their producing portfolio. Breathing Room is a large-scale and complex artwork which requires experienced management from the Producer.

You should be currently producing and developing outdoor work, which might include installation or immersive experience. Experience securing presentations at Light Night events would be an advantage. It is important that you have existing contacts, and can work with Anna to develop her contacts and networks. Already there is strong interest in Breathing Room from the two presentations we have had to date – these need to be nurtured and future bookings secured.

You will have experience in producing work that tours and understand how to oversee the logistics of this with care and attention to detail; working with the Production Manager to secure transport, accommodation, crew etc.

An awareness of neurodiversity and experience of working within disability arts is advantageous, as the main commissioner of Breathing Room is Unlimited, who support the work of disabled artists and audiences. Training will be provided.

Anna is based in Milton Keynes – whilst the majority of the work can be carried out remotely, some in person working with Anna at her studio in MK would be expected, a minimum of 4 times a year.

To apply:

Please provide a current CV in PDF format, along with a short (maximum 1 A4 page) cover letter or 2 minute video, explaining your interest in the work and relevant experience in pitching, securing and delivering similar project(s), and any other information you feel is relevant for us to know in your application. Please also confirm when you would be available to to visit the artwork in person at Wakefield or Gloucester, and when you would be able to partake in a handover (which can be carried out remotely). Please send applications to Kate McStraw on katemcstraw@hotmail.co.uk with Producer Breathing Room as the subject title.

Deadline for applications: 10am Wednesday 13th October. Applications will be assessed as they come in, so applications before the deadline date are encouraged where possible. Interviews will take place over Zoom w/c Mon 18th October.

Terms
Location: remote working, some in person working in Milton Keynes from time to time

Rate of pay: £200 per day, some of which will be reclaimed through Access to Work funds

Initial contract period: 10 days commitment for tour booking and ongoing budgeting/quoting work and (remote) meetings with Anna and the production team. Once bookings are in place, 3-5 days work for each booking is paid for through the presentation fees received. It is expected that the producer would be dedicated to see bookings through from pitch to delivery and wrap up.

Freelance contract, ongoing depending on booking interest received.

Start date: November 2021, some flexibility possible

Several warm leads for 2022/23 are already in place. A full handover will be given by Anna’s current Producer, Kate McStraw (ideally in November 2021).

For an informal chat to discuss the project and post with Kate, please email katemcstraw@hotmail.co.uk
